A Call to Restore Crimea’s Toponyms and Why It Matters

A vital element of the narratives of the Russian world is the cultural imperialist heritage, which leaves its mark on toponyms and other aspects of daily use. To consolidate its dominance in a particular territory, the Kremlin rewrote history. It renamed streets and cities in its own way, thus erasing the authentic historical heritage of places.

The process of decommunization in Ukraine caused great resentment among Russians, and it continues to be the object of manipulation in the news and speeches of the Russian authorities. The propaganda machine did not miss Crimea with its unique history of the Crimean Tatar people.

After the deportation of the Crimean Tatars from their homeland, most of the settlements were renamed for a more comfortable environment for the resettlement of newly arrived Russians and the erasure of historical memory. However, after the de-occupation of the peninsula, the question of cultural and topographical decommunization of the peninsula will arise, and it will have to be solved from a moral point of view and exclusively with the involvement of the indigenous population.
