PACE recognized Putin as illegitimate

PACE recognized Putin as illegitimate. Ukraine in Flames #604

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has declared Vladimir Putin’s presidency as illegitimate, following his fourth term in office and subsequent expected fifth term, citing his 23-year rule as turning Russia into a de facto dictatorship. PACE urged its members to recognise Putin as “illegitimate” and to cease all contact with him, except for humanitarian contact and in the pursuit of peace.

This resolution comes in the wake of the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the war against democracy by Putin’s regime. PACE also condemned the Russian Orthodox Church as an “ideological extension” of Putin’s government and accused it of championing the Russkiy Mir ideology.

The assembly emphasised that the 2024 presidential election, in which Putin was declared the winner, was not free and fair, and it calls on all states to treat the russian regime as a threat to international security and complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity.
