Maritime Security Strategies for Ukraine and NATO

The economic issue is one of the main ones for any state in the conditions of a full-scale war, especially when the opponent prevails in most indicators. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the security of merchant shipping in the Black Sea became one of Kyiv’s top priorities in the diplomatic and military arena.

Kremlin forces tried to create a blockade around Ukrainian ports to weaken Ukraine and blackmail it economically. At the same time, Moscow did not hesitate to attack civilian ships and resort to war crimes, which directly affected the food security of many countries around the world.

However, after a series of successful operations by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation lost a large part of its capabilities and retreated from the northwestern part of the Black Sea. However, maritime security remains an essential topic of diplomatic negotiations, and the minefield of the Black Sea poses a threat to the further use of trade routes.
