In Belarus, the democratic movement gained significant momentum following the disputed 2020 presidential election, with widespread protests demanding the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko. Similarly, Ukraine has a long history of democratic activism, most notably the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Euromaidan protests in 2013-2014, which led to significant political changes.
The formation of Kalinovtsiv, a battalion named after Belarusian revolutionary Kastus Kalinowski, symbolizes the unity and determination of these democratic forces. Established to support Ukraine against Russian aggression, Kalinovtsiv comprises Belarusian volunteers fighting for both Ukrainian sovereignty and the broader liberation of Belarus from authoritarian rule.
Such activity well demonstrates the slogan of the Ukrainian partisan environment during the Second World War: “For our and your freedom!” Ukrainian resistance to Russian imperialism has a multicultural environment, and cooperation with Belarusians, who are ready to oppose Lukashenka’s dictatorial regime, is essential for the region’s future.
