Ukraine resists Russia’s invasion. Day 82: wounded troops to leave Azovstal, statement by Azov, consequences of blockade of ports

Wounded from Azovstal to be likely taken to Russia-held Novoazovsk. The Russian Defense Ministry said Monday that there is an agreement for injured Ukrainian troops at Azovstal in Mariupol to leave the besieged steelworks for Novoazovsk, a Ukrainian town occupied by Russia-backed troops since 2014.

Statement by Azov. Service members in Mariupol said they were “carrying out a decision by the high military command to save lives.” “We hope for support from the Ukrainian people,” they added. The troops said there is a plan, but provided no further details.

The Azov regiment said on Telegram: “The Ukrainian troops defending Mariupol fulfilled the order despite all difficulties, and distracted the overwhelming forces of the enemy for 82 days buying time for the Ukrainian army to regroup, prepare more troops, and get more weapons from the allies. No weapons would work without professionally trained troops, making them the army’s most precious core. In order to save lives, the entire Mariupol garrison is implementing the approved decision of the Supreme Military Command and hopes for the support of the Ukrainian people.”

Satellite imagery reveal another mass grave site near Mariupol. Satellite imagery has detected the fourth mass grave outside Mariupol. The mass burial site is located within the city, not far from the Tsentralne (Central) cemetery, Schemes (Skhemy), a program by Radio Liberty said quoting Maxar satellite imagery.

On May 14, advisor to the mayor of Mariupol Petro Andryushchenko said that the city council obtained reports of use of the conserved historical cemetery Necropolis, a possible site of a mass grave.

Ten people killed as Russia strikes Severodonetsk. At least 10 people were killed as Russia hit Severodonetsk, in Luhansk region, the head of the regional military administration Serhiy Haiday said. Search and rescue works continue as Russia launches new strikes, making work on the ground difficult.

Ukraine to make no concessions to Russia to cease fire, Foreign Minister said. Ukraine’s objective is restoring full territorial integrity, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said. That would include areas of eastern Donbas controlled by Russian-backed forces before the full-scale invasion as well as the Crimean Peninsula seized by Russia in 2014. The Minister expressed confidence that Ukraine will eventually win the war against Russia.
