What is the origin of the Tryzub symbol? What meaning does this symbol have for Ukraine?

As part of the “Question–Answer” format, writer Anne Champs-Massart asks about the origin of the Ukrainian Tryzub, its meaning, and its transformation throughout the centuries. Viewers are also interested in how this symbol is being reinterpreted today — in the context of Ukraine’s modern struggle for freedom.

The questions are answered by Ihor Stambol, PhD in History, writer, and coordinator of the Ukraine Crisis Media Center, who explains that the Tryzub first appeared on Ukrainian lands as early as the 9th century during the rule of the Rurik dynasty. According to the historian, it was under Prince Volodymyr the Great that the symbol became a sign of Kyivan statehood and was later used by his descendants in various transformed forms. After centuries of oblivion, the Tryzub returned as a symbol of Ukrainian statehood in the 20th century — during the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917.

How the Ukrainian Tryzub changed throughout history and why today it has become one of the main symbols of the struggle for independence — watch in the new video.
