Russia has been committing not only crimes against Ukraine and its people — the aggressor country threatens world food security.
Since the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been trying to weaponize food and use it as an instrument of influence. This time, its blackmail failed as the UN and Turkey stood their ground and declared the Ukrainian grain export deal would persist with or without Russia.
However, the problem of Ukrainian and world food security still remains and will be acute in the following year.
“The Russian invasion has had a detrimental and catastrophic impact on Ukraine’s agricultural sector,” says Oleg Nivievskyi, Assistant Professor and Vice President at Kyiv School of Economics. As of now, direct losses in Ukraine’s agriculture reached USD 6.6 billion. It means that Russia has destroyed 23% of Ukraine’s agricultural sector.
Many countries in northern Africa, Asia, and the Middle East depend a lot on grain import and may suffer serious food shortages and high prices. Hence, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine can cause a major food crisis in the world.
Russia is a terrorist state.
