Ukrainians who had to move abroad due to Russia’s brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as well as those that emigrated before due to various reasons, have positively contributed to the growth of hosting economies – this is how experts UCMC has talked to perceive the economic influence of the Ukrainian immigrants and refugees abroad.
In Poland, for instance, even before the full-scale war, Ukrainians made up much of the labor force on the market, and the absolute majority of them were men. After February 24, 2022, however, the situation changed rapidly: now mostly female candidates arrive in the country, and therefore, the labor market has been adjusting. Ukrainian migrants input a lot into the Polish economy not only as employees but also as customers, clients, and consumers. In addition, Ukrainian entrepreneurs start their own businesses in Poland creating jobs, another important contribution to economic development.
10 million Ukrainians had been living abroad before Russia’s full-scale invasion, making up the Ukrainian diaspora and migrants. Almost the same number, about 8 million Ukrainian refugees, had to move abroad due to the Russian war. Ukraine should start thinking now about ways to attract its nationals back home to ensure the recovery of Ukraine after its victory in the war.
