Day 649: Russian forces advance in some areas near Avdiyivka

Russian forces have advanced in some areas near Avdiyivka, the Institute for the Study of War says. Ukraine bolsters its air defenses with more missiles and air defense systems, Zelenskyi says. In December, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will get “several times more” drones than last month, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister says.

Russian forces advance in some areas near Avdiyivka, ISW says

Russian forces conducted offensive operations near Avdiivka on December 3 and recently made confirmed advances, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in a report on Sunday.

Footage published on November 28 and geolocated on December 2 indicates that Russian forces advanced west of the railway north of Stepove (3km northwest of Avdiivka).

Additional geolocated footage published on December 2 indicates that Russian forces advanced southwest of Pervomaiske (10km southwest of Avdiivka).

Russian milbloggers claimed on December 2 and 3 that Russian forces advanced south and southeast of Stepove, with some Russian milbloggers claiming that Russian forces advanced 300 meters near the settlement, ISW said.

Russian milbloggers also claimed on December 2 and 3 that Russian forces advanced south of Novokalynove (13km northeast of Avdiivka) and west of Krasnohorivka (5km northwest of Avdiivka) on Avdiivka’s northern flank as well as on the southern flank near Pervomaiske and Sieverne (6km west of Avdiivka).

The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces unsuccessfully attacked east of Novobakhmutivka (9km northwest of Avdiivka) and Novokalynove; south of Tonenke (5km west of Avdiivka); and near Stepove, Avdiivka, Sieverne, and Pervomaiske.

Russian sources claimed on December 3 that Russian forces also attacked on the northern flank from Kamianka (5km northeast of Avdiivka) and on the southern flank near the industrial zone southwest of Avdiivka.

A Russian milblogger claimed on December 2 that Russian forces are conducting reconnaissance-in-force operations and are regrouping to resume assault operations near the industrial zone southeast of Avdiivka.

Ukrainian Avdiivka Military Administration Head Vitaliy Barabash stated on December 3 that Russian forces opened two additional directions of attack on the industrial zone southeast of Avdiivka and from Spartak (4km south of Avdiivka) during the third wave of assaults on Avdiivka in order to distract Ukrainian forces. Barabash also stated that Russian forces are waiting for weather conditions to improve in order to use heavy equipment in assaults again, the report reads.

Ukraine bolsters air defenses with more missiles, air defense systems, Zelenskyi says

Following a cabinet meeting on Monday, President Zelenskyi said Ukraine had bolstered its air defense capabilities with more missiles and air defense systems it had received from the allies.

“Important defense agreements with our partners continue to be implemented. We have received both critical air defense missiles and new air defense systems. I thank our friends,” Zelenskyi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Ukraine has been boosting its domestic defense production. “We have reached the level of six Bohdana artillery systems per month for the first time. And we can already see ways to further increase the capacity,” Zelenskyi said.

Ukraine has exported over seven million metric tons of grain and other products through a corridor in the Black Sea, he added.

In December, Ukrainian military to get “several times more” drones than last month, Deputy Defense Minister says

In December, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will get several times more drones than they did last month. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry will make available additional funding to buy more drones, particularly tactical level drones, Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine, Ivan Havrylyuk said in an interview with “ArmyInform”.

“In the past months, our military has received an increased number of drones of various types. But we need to understand that due to heavy fighting in some areas on the frontlines, drones, especially tactical level drones, are disposable. The stock of drones needs to be replenished all the time, similar to ammunition. I hope the situation on the battlefield will change,” Havrylyuk said.

Ukraine is looking to scale up not only production of drones, but also manufacturing of electronic warfare systems, Havrylyuk said.

“We continue to increase domestic production of these items. We are dedicating all efforts and available funds to accomplish that,” he added.

Around 70 types of drones and more than 20 types of munitions they carry are now in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Ministry has recently greenlit six new models of electronic warfare systems, including so-called trench electronic warfare.

“We will soon test some anti-drone tactical electronic warfare and drone detection systems,” Havrylyuk said.
