A Russian missile strike on Kyiv on the morning of January 23 caused damage in several neighborhoods of the city. In the Svyatoshynskyi district, cars caught fire. Residents were evacuated from a residential building after an unexploded warhead of a missile was found in one of the apartments. Twenty-two people were wounded in the attack, authorities said. Earlier reports of one fatality were later disproved, as one person was resuscitated in hospital.
Russia launched a combined missile strike on Ukraine, using cruise, ballistic, air and anti-aircraft guided missiles. Ukraine’s General Staff said the country’s armed forces had destroyed 22 of 44 missiles of various types fired by Russia.

Russia unleashed a series of missile attacks on Kharkiv’s civilian infrastructure and the city’s outskirts at around 4 a.m. on January 23. The strikes have damaged private houses, police said. A 15-year-old boy was wounded by glass shards. A boarding school was destroyed. The attacks also damaged a gas pipeline.
During the second wave of attacks at 7 a.m., a missile strike hit an apartment building, destroying an entire section. According to reports updated as of late evening on Tuesday, eight people were killed, including a nine-year-old girl, and 62 others were wounded.
18th meeting of Ukraine Defense Contact Group focuses on Ukraine support for long haul
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hosted the 18th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Tuesday. He addressed virtually a gathering of more than 50 nations committed to defending Ukraine.
The U.S. and allies remain determined to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s aggression, he said.
Ukrainian Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov took part in the meeting.
The gathering is another opportunity to get the more-than-50 countries together to discuss what Ukraine needs, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said.
The 18th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group happened as the U.S. is not able to send fresh aid to Ukraine until Congress passes the supplemental budget request.
The U.S. hopes that other allies will help Ukraine in the meanwhile, she said.
“It’s not just the United States that has been critical in providing security assistance to Ukraine. Our partners, our allies continue to do that despite the fact that we do not have a supplemental that’s been passed by Congress,” Singh said.
The 17th meeting of the group was held virtually on November 22, 2023, with around 50 nations participating. Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi attended the gathering.
