May 5, 2014. – May 18, 2014 will mark the 70th anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, which is always honored in Crimea. That same day, one of the leaders of Mejlis expects provocations that are very likely to expose the power scenario and ban the activities of Mejlis in Crimea. This was announced at a press briefing at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center.
“If I am not worried about Kyiv, then I do know what will happen on 18 May in the Crimea: there will be official speeches about positive perspectives of Crimean Tatars in the Russian Federation, but we’ve heard it in the Soviet Union.

According to Mustafa Jemilev, criminal proceedings have already begun against the leaders of the Mejlis. FSB, prosecutors, and police approach any Crimean Tatars who met with [me] outside of Crimea and threaten to open criminal cases against them for illegally crossing the border of the Russian Federation. I met with Mejlis representatives on the territories of Kherson and Odesa oblasts, and the FSB representatives approach them immediately afterwards accusing them of breaking the law”.
According to Jemilev, Crimean Tatar businessmen who do not recognize the new government are subject to continuous inspections and subject to fines of at least 10,000 Russian rubles, which is not a small amount for a small business. School employees who do not accept Russian citizenship are dismissed as well”.
Mustafa concluded by saying, “discriminatory laws have never stopped Crimean Tatars in the past, though they have always been followed by arrests and prison camps. Crimean Tatars are the fulcrum of resistance against the regime of occupation. [We] will not condone the occupation”.
