Kyiv, 24 June 2014 – “British Government very much welcomed President Poroshenko’s announcement of a Peace Plan and a ceasefire”, said Simon Smith, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Great Britain to Ukraine, during a press briefing at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

“We urge separatists operating in eastern Ukraine to take this opportunity to lay down their arms”, continued Mr. Smith, “and commit themselves to a peaceful resolution of differences”.

The UK strongly supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and its people’s right to choose their own future. The peace plan set out by President Poroshenko is an important step towards this. It is vital that Russia now supports the plan and takes immediate steps to help end the violence in eastern Ukraine, including using its influence to encourage separatists to disarm, and stopping the illegal flow of weapons across the border.

Yesterday, 23rd June, European Union Foreign Ministers met the new Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Pavlo Klimkin, and discussed the peace plan and the ceasefire.
