Joint press conference of the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience, the Ukrainian Association of Religious Researchers and the Department of Religious Studies at the Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the occasion of World Religion Day
Every year on the third Sunday of January, on the UN initiative, the whole world celebrates World Religion Day. The history of the holiday dates back to 1950 and its main purpose is to emphasize the idea that the spiritual principles underlying world religions are harmonious and that religion is, first of all, a force for unifying the world, not for discord. This gives reason to once again consider the role of religion in the modern world.
Ukraine has long been home for representatives of many religions and denominations, large and small in number. Before the full-scale invasion, there were 35,000 religious organizations and more than a hundred different religious movements in our country. Therefore, it is important for society to establish a dialogue between cultures and religions, major and minor, to implement joint social projects, to have a balanced state policy in support of educational and research activities and to implement educational programs in order to obtain high-quality scientific information and educate society in an atmosphere of fruitful cooperation and mutual respect to each other’s worldview differences.
