Today, Ukraine celebrates the 15th anniversary of Vyshyvanka Day. Every third Thursday of May, Ukrainians wear vyshyvankas, traditional embroidered shirts, to work, school, or festive activities.
It’s been 15 years since the holiday was initiated to spread the idea of Ukrainian national identity. This year, the focus of Vyshyvanka Day is on Ukrainian traditional music and ecological problems, emphasizing the connection between cultural heritage and ecology. Today’s motto is, “the land of our ancestors for our descendants”.
Vyshyvanka that has once been a piece of traditional mostly festive clothing is now a popular fashion trend reimagined in modern styles. Ukrainian identity manifested in traditional embroidery keeps inspiring not only Ukrainian but also world-famous designers.
