Russian crimes against cultural heritage and legislation

Russia is responsible for countless war crimes in Ukraine. They hit civilians and civilian infrastructure regularly in numerous acts of terrorism. Moreover, the Russian army is dedicated to destroying not only Ukrainian lives but Ukrainian culture and identity as a whole.

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine states that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the Russian Federation destroyed or damaged over 1062 cultural objects, creating a new precedent for international law – the case of cultural erasure.

There are many ways in which Russia threatens Ukrainian cultural heritage – from destruction via military attacks to using their presence on temporarily occupied territories as a means to implement their narratives and erase Ukrainian identity. To prevent it, Ukraine is working on ways to document Russian crimes against culture, create mechanisms that would ensure due punishment for such crimes, and preserve the remaining cultural objects from Russian aggression.
