Protection of cultural heritage: The Netherlands will help Ukrainians

The Dutch organization Cultural Emergency Response (CER) has launched the Black Sea Regional Hub, which aims to strengthen the capacity to preserve cultural heritage in emergencies. This initiative, announced at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center, is part of a global network created by CER to respond efficiently to cultural emergencies.

Netherlands authorities are helping to safeguard the collections of 140 regional museums in Ukraine and supporting exchange programs that utilize Dutch expertise to assist the Ukrainian cultural sector. This support extends to legal aspects as well, with the Netherlands backing efforts to prosecute perpetrators of crimes targeting cultural objects, recognizing such attacks as war crimes under international law.

Some initiatives, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, aim to protect damaged buildings from further degradation due to harsh winter conditions. Specific projects include safeguarding the Okhtyrka Local History Museum and the Chernihiv Regional Library of Youth, which suffered significant damage from Russian attacks.
