Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant shut off: Rosatom should be sanctioned worldwide! #213

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is extremely important for the energy supply of Ukraine. Having occupied the facility and regularly conducting provocative shelling of the plant, Russia has caused a situation where all six power units of the ZNPP are in cold shutdown, that is the plant does not produce electricity for the unified energy system of Ukraine but consumes it instead.

More importantly, the presence of the Russian military on the territory of the ZNPP and attacks on the plant create a risk of a nuclear disaster that could affect not only Ukraine but many neighbouring countries, including the aggressor itself. Russia has shown numerous times that it is not going to comply with international legislation on nuclear safety or the latest decisions of the IAEA.

The only solution to the looming catastrophe is the creation of a real security zone when the ZNPP is freed from occupiers and returned to Ukraine’s control. The negotiated withdrawal of the Russian military is highly unlikely, thus, the facility can be liberated only by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. More economic sanctions should be imposed against Rosatom, all its divisions, officials, and employees to further pressure the aggressor.
