Russian Orthodox Church is not just being manipulated into justifying Russian aggression against Ukraine, as French President Emmanuel Macron mentioned recently, but is an inherent element of the Russian propaganda machine inciting genocide against Ukrainians.
Ukraine included the Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow, who supported the war against Ukraine as “a religious cleansing operation”, in the sanctions list on October 20 in a somewhat late reaction to the ROC Head’s complicity in Russian crimes, while the EU was about to sanction “Putin’s priest” as part of the sixth sanctions package but he was taken off it after pressure from Hungary’s President Orban.
There were also instances when the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate, which is subordinated to the ROC, acted in the interests of the aggressor state. Ukrainian priests of MP were exposed as collaborating with Russia even after the large-scale invasion of February 24. Even though the Council of UOC MP distanced itself from its Russian head in May 2022, the Ukrainian branch remains under the jurisdiction of Moscow according to the canon law, which clearly threatens the national security of Ukraine.
