Even though the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate has declared it severed its relations with the Russian Orthodox Church and wants to be known as just the Ukrainian Orthodox Church now, its pro-Russian position continues showing. There have recently been instances where the UOC MP was caught praising and collaborating with the enemy, among them – unverified video has surfaced online where the church’s choir in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was praying for Russia.
Taking into account the fact that the Russian Orthodox Church is clearly not a religious organisation but and inherent element of Putin regime, there is no place for the UOC of Moscow Patriarchate in its current state in Ukraine. An even stronger religious policy is needed now to ensure Ukrainian national security and prevent such structures from helping the aggressor in such critical times.
The Ukrainian state has already started this process: in March, the Parliament voted for several legislative acts that provide for a more resolute reaction on the occasions of spreading pro-Russian propaganda, justifying war, etc. by church representatives and religious organizations. The discussion is ongoing whether to ban the UOC MP altogether or pay special attention by the security forces to the organization’s activities, and this issue of Ukraine In Flames covers just that.
