Jews and Russia’s war in Ukraine

The Jewish community of Ukraine comprised approximately 250 thousand people before the start of Russian brutal large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. According to te estimates of organizations dealing with evacuation, approximately half of those who lived in the east moved to the western part of Ukraine. About 10% left Ukraine altogether, finding refuge in various European countries or in Israel.

About half of the Jewish population in Ukraine is over 60, which means that this minority is extremely vulnerable to the challenges of the Russian full-scale war: many of them need financial, medical, and food assistance. Jewish organizations in Ukraine are very active in helping the elderly but also supporting the army, the wounded, dealing with humanitarian issues.

More than a thousand representatives of the Jewish community are fighting in the Ukrainian army, while Jewish communities across entire Ukraine contribute to Ukraine’s victory on the home front: they volunteer to help the IDPs, provide humanitarian assistance to those in need, making no distinction between people, Jews or non-Jews. And this unity is bringing peace to Ukraine, so desperately fought for, closer and closer.

Human rights activist Josef Zissels, Rabbi Liron Ederi from Kryvyi Rih, and head of the cultural center of the Hesed Shaarey Zion Jewish Charity Foundation Hanna Rozen discuss.
