Decolonization of Ukraine’s culture

For centuries, Russia has been used its culture as an instrument of colonization and oppression of other cultures. While Russian army tries to erase Ukrainians as a nation, the expansionism of Russian spreads on the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.

After Feb 24, the processes of decolonization in Ukraine accelerated since Russian-Ukrainian war includes a cultural dimension as well. All the post-Soviet countries have common experience of Russification, monopoly of Russian culture and Russia-centered version of history.

While Pushkin and Lermontov streets and monuments remain the symbols of Russian imperialism, Ukraine is renovating the collective memory of its people and
looking for a ways of decolonizing streets, monuments, educational institutions and public space.

UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
