Keeping Kyiv museums safe

Despite Russia’s numerous shelling attacks on the ancient city of Kyiv, where hundreds of crucial art and culture objects are located, the capital’s treasures stay safe under the watchful eyes of museum and gallery employees.

The staff of the Museum of the History of Kyiv and the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine (the latter was damaged as a result of Russian air strikes on October 10) explain to UCMC how they managed to preserve the museum collection while also keeping themselves and their families safe.

To preserve the memory of the current historic events, the museums not only preserve the heritage but continue collecting exhibits and eyewitness accounts. To keep up the spirits of the capital’s residents, some museums were also partially opened for visiting when it became clear that Russian troops would not manage to take Kyiv. Digitization is a huge part of the museum work nowadays, and it has only increased with the start of the full-scale war.
