Belarus: Russia’s accomplice or an occupied nation?

While Ukraine contemplates the threat of possible invasion of its north from Belarus, which would escalate the already bloody war to a new extent, the Belarusian regime remains rather invested in Russian aggression even the way things are now. Ukraine is still constantly being attacked from airfields in Belarus, with the key target being the critical infrastructure, and millions of civilians are affected as a result.

However, there are reasons to consider Belarus as a country under Russian occupation rather than a side of the conflict, as Lukashenko is not recognized as the legitimate head of the state by both the Belarusian nation and the absolute majority of the world.

The fact that ordinary Belarusians’ opinion on the Russia-Ukraine war is opposite to the Lukashenko regime’s stance makes the role of this country rather dubious. For instance, the
Kastus Kalinovsky’s regiment, formed on the basis of Belarusian volunteers who had been in Ukraine since 2014, numbers several thousand people and heroically fights for both Ukrainian and Belarusian freedom.

There are many other ways the Belarusian nation supports Ukraine in its resistance to the aggressor, and Ukraine In Flames explores them to better understand if Belarus is indeed Russia’s accomplice or an occupied nation.
