Humor as an instrument of resilience: how Ukrainians laugh in russia’s face?

Since the very first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainians have used humor as one more weapon to fight on the information battlefield despite all the horrors of war. The success is obvious: Russia has been literally “drowning” in tons of memes and humiliating funny clips posted daily all over the Internet.

“Humor is a part of Ukrainian culture, and it accompanies all the pages of Ukraine’s history filled with the struggle for independence,” says Lidia Smola, Doctor of Political Sciences. Throughout over 400 years of fighting for our independence overall, Ukrainians have tried to reflect on the traumatic experiences in a humorous way to survive the hardest times.

Ukrainian people found the strength to joke even in the darkest periods of the war — during the first months. For instance, the world-known meme about the Russian military ship that was sent to hell (in a bit more spicy way) has already become legendary. By the way, that woe-ship did. These words of one brave Ukrainian border guard on Zmiinyi island is the quintessence of everything Ukrainians think about the aggressor.

200–300 memes daily about Ukrainian army’s and people’s resistance, first-class weapons from partners, President Zelenskyi and General Zaluzhnyi, statements of politicians and current Russia’s energy terror appear in the Internet faster that comments of officials and experts. These little information bombs masterfully contribute to Ukraine’s victory.
