Sanctions: how it’s affecting russia now and what’s next

Sanctions against Russia are working, however gradual their implementation, with the formal oil price cap set by G7 members among the most recent additions to the pressure on the aggressor. The latter has already contributed to Russia’s flagship Urals crude oil selling at less than half international prices, depriving Moscow of major revenue to finance the war against Ukraine.

The tenth package of sanctions is currently being discussed, and measures against Russia’s nuclear energy production are to be expected as part of it, Oleksandr Lysenko, a member of the International Working Group on Russian Sanctions, says. The next package of sanctions is to also extend the measures imposed on the Russian Federation to other countries that support Russia’s war, such as Belarus and Iran.

However, to ensure the sanction mechanism works, it is necessary to prevent the circumvention of sanctions. In this regard, the European Union has recently adopted a decision to define the circumvention of sanctions as a crime. Experts argue that at this point, it isn’t even about expanding the sanction packages: it’s about ensuring strict compliance with the existing restrictions.
