Culture as a symbol of resistance in the war

Annihilation of Ukrainian culture has been the aggressor’s strategy since the times of the Russian empire. Trying to deny, marginalize or absorb Ukrainian cultural heritage, Russia tried to impose on Ukrainians the inferiority complex and made them feel secondary in everything.

However, the spirit of Ukrainian resistance has always been stronger than metropolis ambitions. Our nation managed not only to preserve but also to increase our cultural heritage.

The cultural dimension of the Russian-Ukrainian war is aimed to erase the Ukrainian identity — but the paradox is that it even strengthens Ukrainian solidarity and fostering of Ukrainian culture. While Russian identity is now built mostly on denial of everything Ukrainian, ours is based on creating new senses and ideas — and that is why Russia is bound to lose the cultural war.

UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
