Since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion, Odesa became one of the strategic targets of the enemy missile attacks. This year, the historic center of the city received the status of a UNESCO monument.
Except for the increase in tourist interest after Ukraine’s victory, the status of UNESCO protection will become another reason to prosecute Russia in the International Court of Justice. This is another symbolic victory for Ukraine in cultural space.
While Russian propaganda disseminates the myth about Odesa as a “Russian city”, the UNESCO status may debunk it as well as help the city amidst the war.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
