Mariupol cultural code and de-occupation of Ukrainian theatre

For centuries, Russia has been trying to portray Ukrainian culture as provincial and marginal. The theatre was no exception.

The myth of great Russian theatre was one of the imperial methods to absorb Ukrainian theatrical culture and impose an inferiority complex. Mariupol theater, which is in fact Donetsk Regional Academic Theater, became one of the important symbols of Ukrainian resistance to the Russian occupation, as well as all the cities on the temporarily occupied territories.

Now, Russia traditionally tries to appropriate it by physically destroying the building to hide the traces of Russian war crimes. However, despite the aggressor’s attempts to rewrite history, Mariupol was and will be one of the hearths of Ukrainian culture.

UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
