How Russia uses traditional religions to support the war

Religious beliefs have been systematically used by Russia to strengthen its control and influence and impact on society. As Russian orthodoxy is one of the pillars of the Russkiy mir quasi-ideology, religious identity remains a significant part of contemporary Russian identity.

Since 2014, the aggressor state has used religion to justify the war against Ukraine — and continues to do it now. For years, the influence of the Moscow Patriarchate has extended to Ukraine as well.

As the representatives of the Russian orthodox church both in Russia and Ukraine have regularly shifted the blame for the Russian aggression on Ukraine, they also have to share the responsibility for inciting hatred toward Ukrainians and not condemning the war.

UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
