Polish Carriers and the Blockade of the Ukrainian Border

The ongoing blockades by Polish truckers at the Ukrainian-Poland border have severe implications for both countries. These protests stem from the truckers’ concerns over unfair competition and regulations that have significantly reduced Ukraine’s overall, estimated to be about a fifth in November.

If these protests persist, they could potentially cost Kyiv one percentage point of GDP growth. Moreover, the disruption has caused thousands of trucks to be stuck at the border since November 6, leading to a sharp decrease in imports and driving up prices of goods in Ukraine. In addition to impacting imports, the protests may also affect Ukraine’s road exports, which are crucial due to Russia’s attempts to blockade the Black Sea.

These blockades have further strained the already delicate relations between Ukraine and Poland, with talks between the two countries and the EU reaching a stalemate. While the motivations behind the protests are rooted in economic concerns, the situation plays into Russia’s hands by creating divisions and instability within Ukraine’s neighbouring countries, potentially benefiting Russia’s geopolitical interests in the war.
