Ukraine in Flames: Russian geopolitical blackmail going beyond Ukraine

While Russia is failing to achieve its objectives in Ukraine, it tries to compensate by threatening the world with armed assault and nuclear warfare. The EU is working on a full fossil embargo, so Russia will lose one of its most effective blackmailing tools – oil and gas cuts. Instead, Russia brags military strength – Russia’s classical tools to maintain international influence, as well as popular support at home. The Kremlin has already publicly threatened Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovakia, Czech Republic, UK, US, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway since the start of the war in 2014. Simulations of nuclear missile attacks and air raides are discussed on Russian television every other day.

The international community has recently made great progress in ignoring the Kremlin’s blackmail and not taking its threats at face value. The first Ramstein Air Base meeting united over 40 nations whose principled position is to support Ukraine in defeating the aggressor. Russia’s threats and events in Ukraine persuaded Finland, Sweden and Norway to consider NATO membership and to quit the neutral status.

Ukraine in Flames #58 finds out how Russia’s geopolitical threats are perceived by the international community, what the responses to such hybrid attacks should be and why it is important for the future global stability.
