74 days have passed since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The hostilities affected all, without exaggeration, spheres of life in Ukraine – on both national and individual levels. Russia is committing genocide against the Ukrainian nation. The facts that indicate this are the infamous massacre sites in the Kyiv region – Bucha, Borodyanka, Irpin, Hostomel. At the same time, the violence perpetrated by the Russian army continues in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine.
Chaotic killings, rapes of women and children, torture, abductions, deportations of the local population to Russia, filtration camps, looting and forced mobilization are by no means an exhaustive list of tools used by the Russian army to “denazify and demilitarize” Ukraine.
Ukraine in Flames #59 is about those Ukrainians who managed to escape from the Russian occupation and their experiences. Our project is one of many platforms where Russia’s crimes are exposed to later be internationally prosecuted. We believe that publicity and empathy are essential countermeasures to violence.
