How the new aid package for Ukraine for 2024 is changing European security approaches

The new $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, approved by Congress in 2024, marks a significant commitment to bolstering Ukrainian defences against Russian aggression, thereby altering the landscape of European security by enhancing frontline resistance and deterring further territorial advances by Russia. By including advanced weaponry such as long-range ATACMS missiles, the aid package directly impacts European security by improving Ukraine’s capability to threaten and destroy Russian military targets, which could force Russia to reconsider its military deployments, particularly in occupied Crimea, thereby enhancing Black Sea security.

Russian propaganda tries to use this aid package as a pretext to spread the narrative about a new round of escalation in the war and more involvement of the West in the war. However, the aid package’s focus on replenishing Ukraine’s ammunition and enhancing its air defence capabilities is crucial for stabilizing the frontline and protecting civilian infrastructure, which is vital for maintaining morale and the overall resilience of Ukrainian society in the conflict.

The coming year could be one of the most important in this war because of elections in many countries and the shortage of russian economics that implies minimal ability to replenish military equipment.
