More and more reports of the horrific crimes the Russian troops committed against civilians in the occupied territories are coming to light. Sexual violence, among them, has been a systematic instrument of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
The BBC reported yet another gruesome war crime Russian invaders did in Bucha, referring to Ukraine’s ombudsman for human rights Lyudmyla Denisova. “About 25 girls and women aged 14 to 24 were systematically raped during the occupation in the basement of one house in Bucha. Nine of them are pregnant,” she said.
The tactic of rape is aimed at breaking the civil resistance and is consistent with the scorched earth policy. Watch our video explainer of why violence against women is a systematic instrument of Russian occupation.
