Day 1,216: Russia preparing new military operations in Europe, Zelenskyi says, citing intelligence

A Russian drone and missile attack kills nine in Kyiv, including a child. Ukraine has intelligence that Russia is preparing new military operations in Europe, Zelenskyi says. Russia has sustained more than USD 1.3 billion worth of direct losses from Ukraine’s deep strikes into its territory, the Ukrainian military says.

Russian drone, missile attack kills nine in Kyiv, including a child

A Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight killed at least nine people and injured 34 others in the capital, Kyiv. An 11-year-old girl was among those killed. The city’s seven districts sustained damage from the attack, with the most severe damage occurring in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where one section of a five-story apartment building collapsed.

Emergency crews were still working Monday evening to rescue people they believed to be trapped under the debris of the building. Eight people were taken to hospital.

Ukraine’s Air Force said it had downed or otherwise neutralized 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles launched by Russia in the attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region.

In the broader Kyiv region, a woman was killed and at least eight other people were injured in the city of Bila Tserkva. Three other districts in the region — those of Bucha, Boryspil and Vyshgorod were affected by the attack. Apartment buildings, private homes, administrative buildings, medical and education facilities, industrial enterprises, shops and cars sustained damage.

Ukraine has intelligence that Russia is preparing new military operations in Europe, Zelenskyi says

Russia is preparing new military operations in Europe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in a post to social media on Sunday after receiving intelligence from the military intelligence chief, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov.

“Report by Chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov. Lots of details about the situation in Russia and its defense industry. We’re aware of the aggressor state’s key vulnerabilities and will strike accordingly to defend our state and people, as well as to significantly reduce Russia’s capacity for aggression. We are observing a continued intellectual decline within the Russian leadership and have evidence that they are preparing new military operations on European territory,” Zelenskyi said on X.

He also commended the economic sanctions imposed on Russia, citing their “tangible damage.” “We are also witnessing the very tangible damage being inflicted on Russia’s economic system by sanctions, which confirms the correctness of our course of forcing Russia to end the war through the intensification of sanctions and other forms of pressure. We will keep our partners informed of the facts obtained by our intelligence services. We are preparing joint decisions for defense, in particular with the United Kingdom and the European Union. I thank everyone around the world who is helping us protect lives,” Zelenskyi said.

Russia has sustained more than USD 1.3 billion worth of direct losses from Ukraine’s deep strikes into its territory

Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory are highly efficient. The ratio between the cost of such strikes and the damage they inflict on Russia is estimated at 1:15, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi told journalists on Saturday.

“What is efficient? The DeepStrike [project]. It is probably one of our strongest points when [the strike’s] efficiency exceeds 15 times what we spent to deliver the strike,” Syrskyi said, cited by Ukrainian news site Novynarnya.

Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia will continue, he added.

“Of course, we will continue [to strike the Russian territory as part of DeepStrike]. We will scale it up and increase the depth [of the strikes]. We are not fighting against civilians, we are targeting and destroying only military installations,” Syrskyi said.

During the talks Russia demanded that Ukrainian strikes on its oil refineries stop. “It shows that our strikes are truly efficient,” Syrskyi said.

“We are developing both drone and missile programs as part of the DeepStrike project. We will continue to strike deep inside Russia, scale up [these attacks] and increase the depth of the strikes,” Syrskyi said in a post to Facebook.

“Between January and May 2025, Ukraine’s Unmanned Aerial Systems in cooperation with other branches of the Ukrainian military conducted a series of deep strike operations that sought to undermine the adversary’s military and economic potential. Russia’s industries suffered more than USD 10 billion worth of losses, including more than USD 1.3 billion worth of direct losses in oil refining, production of fuels and lubricants, energy and transportation sectors as well as in strategic communications. Indirect losses, estimated at more than USD 9.5 billion, result from disruptions in refinery operations, production halt at a number of facilities, blocked logistics, interruptions in transportation of goods,” a background note released to journalists said.

“As a result, the cost to effectiveness ratio of DeepStrike operations is estimated at approximately 1:15, which proves the efficiency of this tool in weakening both Russia’s economic and military capabilities,” it reads.
