Russia’s overnight attacks on Ukraine kill four, including mother and child
Russia launched a total of 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 149 drones at Ukraine in a series of strikes between Sunday evening and Monday morning, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The unmanned aerial systems included Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas attack drones and drones of other types. Around 90 of the drones were the Shaheds. The drones were fired from the area of Russia’s Kursk, Oryol, Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Shatalovo as well as from occupied Donetsk and Hvardiyske in Crimea.
Ukraine’s air defenses shot down or otherwise neutralized 116 drones. Some of the ballistic missiles were intercepted, others did not reach their target, the Air Force said, without providing details. Twenty-three drones and an unspecified number of missiles hit target in 15 locations and the falling debris fell in six places, it added.
According to media reports, Russia launched two missile strikes on the city of Vasylkiv in Kyiv region late on Sunday.
Russia damaged a high-voltage substation near the community of Novovolynsk in Volyn region overnight, leaving more than 80,000 consumers without power, local mayor Borys Karpus said. Critical infrastructure in the city is now running off generators, he added.
An overnight Russian drone attack on Odesa killed one person and injured two others. In the city of Bohodukhiv, in Kharkiv region, a woman and her 10-year-old son were killed in an overnight drone strike. Three more people were injured. Ukraine to add to its fleet 150 Gripen jets and 100 Rafales, Zelenskyi says
Ukraine has signed letters of intent with international partners for 150 Swedish-made Gripen jets and 100 French Rafale fighters, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said while meeting with the students and professors of the National University Kyiv Aviation Institute on Sunday.
“Ukraine has agreements for the supply of 150 Gripen fighter jets and 100 Rafales. These are, in our view, the world’s best aircraft,” he said, as cited by Ukrinform news agency. The fighter jets are new ones, he added.
Zelenskyi also said strengthening air capabilities is one of the country’s priorities. New aircraft will contribute to this goal. He said he’s in constant contact with the Air Force and military command. Ukraine’s fleet also comprises F-16 fighter jets that are not new.
Kyiv to get 9 MW of additional generating capacity, energy minister says
Kyiv will get 9 additional megawatts of electricity on Sunday, Denys Shmyhal, First Vice Prime Minister — Energy Minister told a meeting of the Energy Emergency Headquarters.
“The situation with electricity supply remains difficult. Energy workers continue to repair the sites that Russia damaged overnight on February 7. The damage is considerable. We are working on comprehensive solutions, particularly on the launch of additional generating capacity. The works proceed as scheduled. Today, we expect the launch of 9 megawatts of additional capacity in Kyiv,” Shmyhal said Sunday.
Sunday marked the highest daily energy imports last week, he added. Imported electricity helped maintain the system’s integrity and decrease the deficit following Russia’s attacks.
The Energy Ministry in cooperation with the Ministry for the Development of Communities and Territories continue to request relief aid from international partners. Ukraine has received 27,000 tons of humanitarian aid since the invasion with 25,100 tons distributed among energy companies and sent to the country’s regions, the message reads.
In the past two weeks, the Energy Ministry received 17 humanitarian shipments from 11 senders in Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Germany, Austria, Lithuania and Italy. Some 774 generators, 40 pieces of modular boiler houses, cogeneration systems and boilers were sent across the country. More equipment is on the way, including 798 generators, 117 transformers as well as 120 boilers and cogeneration systems.
“We thank everyone who works round the clock in frosty weather, bringing back the light and heating to the homes of Ukrainians,” Shmyhal said.
