Andriy Lysenko: Ukrainian troops fought off militant subversive attack by Shchastya, Luhansk region

Kyiv, July 4, 2015. Ukrainian troops have fought off the attack of ten militants in the area close to Shchastya, Luhansk region, said Colonel Andriy Lysenko, spokesman of the Administration of the President of Ukraine on ATO related issues, at the press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

Col. Lysenko noted that Russia-backed militants carried on using heavy weapons in the Luhansk sector: “The enemy shelled Ukrainian military positions near Novotoshkovske from 120mm mortars three times, as well as used 152mm artillery close to Tryokhizbenka in the nighttime.” According to Col. Lysenko, militants prefer to use heavy weapons during the night trying to avoid attention of the OSCE observers.

Militants also used a wide array of weapons – 120mm mortars, 122mm howitzers and 152mm artillery systems – in the area of Opytne village, Donetsk sector. Other hotspots included Pisky, Maryinka, Krasnohorovka, Sanzharovka and Troyitke, as well as the outskirts of Horvlivka such as Mayorsk.

Col. Lysenko reported of only two ceasefire violations in the Mariupol sector; however, militants used heavy mortars in the area of Novotroyitske.

Ukrainian border guards spotted two flights of militant UAVs.

One Ukrainian servicemen was killed in action and two more were wounded in the last 24 hours.

Ukraine’s Security Service detained a militant informer in the Vynnytsia region who was recruited by the Russian GRU operative with nom-de-guerre “Starshyna”. The detained informer used to gather intelligence on the Ukrainian troops stationed in the region.
