While the world condemned the state-sponsored violence against the pro-democratic movement in Belarus for the past two years, Russian propaganda supported Lukashenko’s authoritarian regime virtually from the very first day of protests.
Such was the focus of Russian disinformation about Belarus in 2020-2021, but what other topics and narratives were promoted on the state-controlled media? Among the most prominent narratives were:
- justifying police brutality as “severe but necessary”;
- calling the rigged elections “fair and democratic”;
- portraying Russia and Belarus as two “fraternal states”;
