On July 8, CMC “Siverskyi Donets” hosted a world presentation of the Ukrainian version of the Democracy Cake – Recipe for Democracy game. The game was developed by the Norwegian organization Rafto Foundation for Human Rights and is widely used in many countries.
Yuriy Stepanets, Chairman of the Board of the Public Initiatives NGO, presented the game in Luhansk region.
The Recipe for Democracy can be used as a learning tool for schoolchildren and students, or people who are still unfamiliar with the components of a democratic state. The game involves heated debates and constant discussions, because all decisions in the game space are made together. The main goal of the game is to jointly build democracy in a society that turns into a pie in the game environment. The game players seem to be engaged in collective cooking, adding different ingredients layer by layer.
“In this game either everyone wins or everyone loses. If we cannot defend democracy, we will live in bad conditions, in totalitarianism. This game is a kind of stimulant, you will not necessarily win, but you can learn a lot about democracy and form an attitude to the real situation in our country,” comments Mr. Stepanets.
Currently, 250 copies of the game have been prepared for Ukraine, and they will be distributed to NGOs, school teachers, and human rights coaches.

The event was part of the Contemporary Regional Media Project – a pledge of quality in a media-competent democratic Ukraine, which is being implemented by the Ukraine Crisis Media Center with the financial support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs represented by the Norwegian Embassy in Kiev.
