For years, the Russian propaganda machine has been promoting the narrative of Ukraine as a country without cinematography. In Soviet times, brilliant Ukrainian movies were dubbed in Russia as a “common language of the whole USSR”.
This unification worked and created the vision of thriving Russian cinema and an almost not-existing Ukrainian one. Since Ukraine has got its independence, Ukraine has started to go out of the Russian sphere of influence and talented Ukrainian directors started working with Ukrainian material and promoting authentic Ukrainian culture in the world and not its naive version created by the Soviet Union.
Now, cinema is a full-fledged artistic language that lets Ukrainian voices be heard around the world, and international film festivals make Ukraine closer to the whole world and prove that Ukrainian cinema is worth watching.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
