Traditional Ukrainian Christmas and how it survived Soviet ban

Ukrainian Christmas is rich in traditions with a long history. This holiday has incorporated both Christian and pagan elements, folk traditions and Biblical senses.

Having transformed from a pre-Christian holiday in honour of the Sun to the holiday of joy from Nativity of Jesus Christ, Ukrainian Christmas is now a unique cultural phenomenon. In XX century, Soviet totalitarian regime was doing everything to erase Ukrainian folk traditions and “religious prejudices” and replace them with Soviet simulacrums, such as “Komsomol Christmas”.

However, the Christmas customs was strong enough to stand under pressure. Ukrainians managed to preserve the traditions of vertep (a house with a puppet theater presenting a nativity scene) and koliadky (Christmas carols). Now, these traditions experience new heyday – and even Russian missiles cannot steal our Christmas.
