The war, that Russia is waging against Ukraine, is also a cultural war as well as the war for identity. For centuries, Russian colonial policy has been concentrated on either appropriating or marginalizing Ukrainian culture.
Now, Russian cultural policy is built on exploiting the image of “great Russian culture” to promote Russian imperialism. Also, this policy includes appropriating the artists who represent indigenous people and colonized nations — and incorporating them into imperial tradition.
Therefore, cultural diplomacy for Ukraine is now an important way to communicate Ukrainian identity to the world to make up for the times when we were silenced by the oppressor.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
