The war, that Russia is waging against Ukraine, is a neo-colonial war. While targeting Ukrainian sovereignty and identity, the aggressor also used this war for ethnic cleansing inside the Russian Federation.
The disproportion in mobilization statistics shows that the representatives of indigenous peoples in Russia are more likely to be sent to fight in Ukraine. In addition to Russian repressions against Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Crimea, the aggressor’s neo-colonialism threatens every sign of “otherness”.
With such indigenous peoples as Tuvans being on the edge of disappearing, Russia keeps implementing the policy of assimilation, aimed to erase the indigenous identities and ultimately replace them with an imperial one.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
