The struggle to protect stray animals during the war

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine led to a significant humanitarian disaster not only for civilians but also for animals. From hostilities and frequent indiscriminate shelling of settlements throughout the territory of Ukraine, not only pets and domestic animals but also many wild animals in the forests and steppes were affected.

Many shelters operating on a volunteer basis face an incredible workload to save lost and abandoned animals. The situation was especially complicated by the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, which led to the death of an incredible number of animals, the destruction of the “Kazkova Dibrova” zoo and the mass extinction of river fish, which can be considered as ecocide.

Today, it is vital to help shelters and volunteer organizations in every possible way. Despite constantly limited resources, they rescue and care for defenceless animals in the face of war.
