Why we should remember Holodomor in today’s context?

Ukrainian history is densely marked by Russia’s attempts to destroy any manifestations of Ukrainian national consciousness and subjugate the entire nation and its existence. One of the instruments of this was the Holodomor – genocide by hunger in 1932-33, which led to the death of 2 to 10 million people.

The majority of the population of Ukraine still feels the consequences of the Holodomor of those years, and almost every Ukrainian has ancestors who died as a result of the actions of the Soviet-Russian authorities. For many generations, this act of genocide remained a taboo topic not only because of the horrors of history but also because Russia tried in every possible way to hide its actions not only within the country but also for the international community.

After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, many countries, as part of their political support, began to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Now, when the Russian Federation tried to block Ukrainian exports as leverage, it is essential to remember that Russia is very capable of any atrocities to achieve its goal.
