The traditions of Russian imperialism are based on the colonial perception of the territories they captured. Numerous territories populated by ethnic Ukrainians experienced violent Russification and rewriting of history.
The Kremlin’s use of a pseudo-historical rationale for its territorial claims has become commonplace in Russian propaganda. Russia uses fictional constructs to assert its claim to territory, culture, resources, history, and people.
However, as we have seen since the beginning of the Kursk operation, the Russian authorities use this only when it benefits them and not when it is a problem. Judging by how Russian troops treat the Russian border, many conclusions can be drawn regarding the actual situation of the population of these territories for the Kremlin.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
