In 1932-1933, the Soviet regime provoked one of the biggest tragedies in Ukrainian history – Holodomor. Man-made famine was chosen by Joseph Stalin not only as an instrument of intimidation but also to liquidate the social strata of wealthy Ukrainian peasants with private property.
By the early 1930s, when the Ukrainian national movement was thriving, it was extremely important to remain in control over Ukraine as a “soviet land” – and the physical liquidation of millions of Ukrainians was an acceptable method for Stalin “not to lose Ukraine”.
On November 23-24, Romania, Moldova, and Ireland recognized Holodomor as an act of genocide against Ukraine – and this is another step towards holding Russia, as a USSR successor, to responsibility.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
