Since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the entire civilized world chose to stand with Ukraine, the position of China has been ambiguous. However, despite the close ties with Moscow, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has never openly supported the Russian aggression.
In April, Xi Jinping had the first phone call with the Ukrainian President after China’s 14-month silence. The Chinese policy of neutrality is now followed by Beijing’s efforts to play peacemaker between Kyiv and Moscow.
