Ukraine and Taiwan stand together against disinformation

Ukraine and Taiwan have demonstrated resilience in countering disinformation, emphasizing the importance of a multifaceted approach involving civil society and government cooperation. Taiwan’s successful defence against disinformation during its recent presidential election serves as an example to other democracies, highlighting the effectiveness of a comprehensive response to foreign and domestic disinformation campaigns.

The civil societies in both countries, such as Taiwan’s MyGoPen and the Taiwan FactCheck Center, have played a crucial role in raising public awareness and debunking false rumours, showcasing the significance of independent fact-checking initiatives. China’s efforts to spread disinformation in Taiwan, including tailored misinformation regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reinforces the need for a vigilant and proactive approach to countering such propaganda.

The shared experience of both nations being under constant military threat from their authoritarian neighbours underscores the necessity for a united front against disinformation, emphasizing the importance of basing political judgments on facts and sound reasoning.
