Reassessing the history of the Donetsk region and Mariupol is a difficult matter, given their importance in the ongoing war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Donetsk region, historically an industrial and coal-mining region, experienced dramatic political and demographic changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The city of Mariupol, located on the Sea of Azov, has been at the heart of the conflict, witnessing intense fighting and transition between Ukrainian government forces and separatist groups. Studying the historical context of these regions involves understanding their economic, cultural, and political dynamics, shedding light on deep-seated issues that continue to shape the region’s fate and broader geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe.
The Russian vision of Mariupol and Donbass as part of Russian territory that was captured/transferred/gifted to Ukraine is an essential narrative in Russian propaganda. In order to know how to reintegrate these territories, it is necessary to understand very clearly the history of the region and the cultural features of what was planted by the Russians in the last 9 years.
UKRAINE IN FLAMES project is created by Ukraine Crisis Media Center and NGO “Euroatlantic Course”. We are aiming at searching a loud support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia on the 24th of February 2022.
